Dear Collectors

Here is the “other” list I mentioned I’d be doing when I sent out the last one. It got delayed for a number of reasons. It seems everyday lately I get tied up with some kind of new battle of one sort or another. I (more or less) finish one and a new one pops up.

DENVER SHOW:
Yep, this is coming waaay too soon for me. I am trying to get ready but having limited success. Anyway, this year it is September 9th through the 17th. I am at the same spot – Frisco meeting room on the west-side of the convention center at the Crowne Plaza (I-70 and Chambers road). I’ll be open 10 am (some days earlier) until - ?? I like to stay open later but the show folks have been locking the doors around 7pm (you can still reach me by going through the lobby doors). I’ll stay open as late (reasonably – no 1am or 2am nights) as people are visiting.

On to today’s list!:

FRANCONIA, Arizona: Ordinary chondrite (H5). Found October 31, 2002. Tkw = about 100kg.
Well somebody got quite the Halloween treat here. It was a meteorite hunter that just thought the area looked good for hunting (fairly level, lack of vegetation and natural rocks) and gave it a shot. Yep, he managed to stumble into one of the largest Arizona strewn fields currently known. I got these three pieces in Tucson this year from a metal-detector guy who found them himself many years ago (he couldn’t remember if it was 12 or 15 years). Anyway, all three of these are complete individuals. The two smaller have complete primary fusion crust coverage. The largest piece (the second largest Franconia piece I have ever had) looks like it is a “half stone” (about 60% primary crust and then about 40% “broken” surface). Well, the guy that found this found it in two pieces. He (rather poorly) glued the pieces together (I cleaned off a lot of the excess glue but plenty still remains). He did look for more pieces, recognizing that there was, obviously half missing. He found no further pieces. I know why. Careful inspection of the “broken” surface shows tiny areas of melted (crust) material. So, this “broken” area is actually an area of very light secondary fusion crust from this stone breaking very late in its fall.

NWA (2995): Lunar: Feldspathic breccia. Found 2005. Tkw = 538 grams.
NWA (2995) was noted (and still is) as one of the very best looking Lunar meteorites. It has the classic white to light gray clasts in a medium gray background. Pieces of this meteorite have always commanded a premium because of this. I sold this to its current owner (it was a consigned specimen back then as it is now) back in January of 2016. This is a 3.08g complete slice that cost him $2200 at the time (this was priced at $4500 not a lot earlier). Wanting to put $ towards travel and other things (photography equipment I believe) he says “sell”. At this point, $1500 is being asked. Yes, high (per gram) when compared to other more recent lunar material but, by far, the cheapest I have seen a piece of this really pretty moon rock. Also, for history sake (?), included is the original invoice I sent with the piece when I sold it to him in 2016.
3.08 gram complete slice – 42mm x 30mm x 1mm - $1500

NWA (7983): Achondrite (Ureilite). Found 2012, Tkw = 424 grams.
I got these pieces in Tucson this year. They are nice thin pieces and clearly show the classic triple-junction crystallization texture typical for Ureilites (and Brachinites actually). These pieces are NOT polished. Another classic feature of ureilites is that they are often nearly impossible to cut and polish (so much so that slices of ureilites like these are very uncommon). To be honest, I never even tried to polish these. I have destroyed enough saw blades and sanding belts prepping other material lately, I really didn’t want to risk it. Part of this is a partially sanded/ polished slice looks terrible. It is kind of an all or nothing deal. Do ALL of it or don’t start. So, be ready to donate hours (a day or two) and lots of equipment (many, many silicon carbide sanding belts or more than $100 of diamond ones) or don’t begin. I chose the “don’t start” as I can see one side of the large slice here that the saw blade that cut it really struggled – indicating that this is NOT one of the (very rare) easy to polish ureilites. It turns out the Meteoritical Bulletin write-up or this says “diamonds ubiquitous” (means lots of them everywhere in this thing).Thankfully, each of these has at least one side (the smaller piece – both sides) where the cutting went pretty well – leaving an unpolished saw cut surface that is not distracting.

PEEKSKILL, New York: Ordinary chondrite (H6). Fell October 9, 1992. Tkw = 12.57kg.
I remember making the mold of this meteorite. I had to apply a layer of latex (and occasional cheese cloth) like every 15 minutes. Nope, didn’t get much (any?) sleep that night. I flew back home (from northern Montana to Durango) when done, getting home quite late. Then another night of almost no sleep. It was back to the Durango (well, La Plata County if you want to be a stickler about names) airport around 5:30 or so the next morning for a ride to Germany. Anyway, the mold worked out really well so the meteorite was then cut. This is a part slice from that cutting. This slice does have a little bit of brown staining (mild oxidation) but clearly shows the classic breccia texture of this meteorite. Also classic for this fall that totaled a Chevy Malibu is super thick (like over 1mm thick) fusion crust (that all of us worried might peel off when the stone was removed from the mold I had made but, thankfully, didn’t). The longest side of this triangular shaped slice is a crusted edge showing this super thick crust. This comes in an Impactika membrane box but it is not in that box to show the piece better in the group photo.
2.90 gram part slice – 25mm x 11mm x 4mm - $1000

RED DEER HILL, Canada: Ordinary chondrite (L6). Found 1975. Tkw = 25kg.
Aside from Buzzard Coulee and White Court, I’ve had very few Canadian meteorites in recent years. I got these pieces from the same person I got the Peekskill listed above from. The smaller one has a Kansas Meteorite Society COA. The larger piece’s info is still missing (but being looked for). Regardless, the appearance and textures of both pieces are identical. This is NOT cheap for a chondrite find, admittedly, but pretty much any and all Canadian pieces I have offered (regardless of “cheapness”) have all sold very rapidly (and, usually, back to collectors in Canada). Each of these are in a membrane box but are not in these for the group photo to better show the specimens themselves. Both pieces are wedged in their cut, so the listed thickness is just something of a mid-range.

TULIA (a), Texas: Ordinary chondrite. (H5). Found 1917. Tkw = 78+kg.
This piece is from a REAL Tulia(a) specimen I have had tucked away for years. I say “real” as Tulia(a) has suffered something of an identity crisis most of its existence. The Dimmitt strewn field is quite close (just to the west). Back when ‘Tulia’ was studied, nobody had considered two different meteorite strewn fields could be that close together. As such, a (more commonly found, but found slightly further west) Dimmitt stone was studied and reported as Tulia. So, “officially”, most of the records have Tulia(a) as an H3/4. Nope, that is what Dimmitt is (well, even that is a bit different now. Dimmitt has been reclassified as an H3.8 I believe). The real Tulia is an H5 and shows a good amount of fresh metal (Dimmitt rarely shows any). Anyway, this is a guaranteed real sample of Tulia (a).
22.6 gram end piece- 40mm x 22mm x 12mm - $55

TULIA (b), Texas: Ordinary chondrite, (L6). Found 1917, recognized later. Tkw = 4.4+kg.
Now, just to show what a mess the Tulia meteorite area is, in addition to Dimmits getting mixed in, we have at least one L-chondrite(*) in the mix. A couple of pieces of “Tulia” were recovered and sitting in museum collections (Chicago Field Museum and British Museum). Nope, they weren’t “Tulia” actually, they were L-chondrites. I don’t know when this was finally realized, but it turned out that TCU had a couple as well. I managed to get a 1400 gram individual of this “new” meteorite from them (helping them identify it and keep a larger piece of the same material for their collection) years ago. This part slice is (likely my last) piece from that 1400g piece. This shows nice weathered fusion crust along 50% of its edges.

*- I have yet another L chondrite from the area. It is very fresh (nice fusion crust) and had lots of chondrules that looks certainly to be a type 4 (certainly NOT a 6). I spent the money years ago on it to have the chemistry run and found it has pretty much identical Faylite (iron in olivine) numbers as the known Tulia (b) L6. Despite this, I am absolutely CERTAIN it is a new meteorite (it has obviously been on the ground far less time than Plainview, which likely fell in 1903) but no way to “prove” it (and I have to little to try and report it as a new meteorite, unfortunately).

Shipping: For small US orders $5 is needed now. Rates have gone up yet more this year and now the cheapest I can send anything is right at $5. Add $ for the padded envelope or box, jewelry boxes, etc and, in most cases, I am still loosing a little even at $5. Larger orders are now $9 to $16 (insurance is extra if desired – I’ll look it up if you want it).

Overseas prices have gone up A LOT the past couple years. Now small overseas orders are around $16 (Canada seems to be right around $14). I’ll have to custom quote any larger items/ orders (both local and overseas). Registration (recommended on more valuable overseas orders) is $16.

I do have a fax machine that seems to work (but I have to answer it and manually turn it on), so overseas people can contact me that way if they must. However, for overseas orders, it probably is best to go ahead and use my brmeteorites@yahoo.com e-mail when possible.

  Well, summer has certainly arrived here. We had a fairly nice, mild (and damp) spring this year. In fact, I actually spent the 4th of July up at A-Basin ski area skiing! It is a rare year that they get to sty open for the 4th (I think it was around 8 or 9 years ago that they last pulled it off). Normally, we break 100 by the end of May. This year we made it all the way into July before seeing or first 100 degree day (it was just over 102 about a week and a half ago). Right now, we are getting the full sun hot treatment usually reserved for June. We have been right at (or slightly above) 100 for the past week. Supposedly, we have some rain (and very slightly cooler temps – but still solidly in the mid 90s or higher) coming later this week.

Anyway, here is a summer offering of a few things I found sitting in the “new” or “rediscovered” pile. Looking at the group photo, I see that the structure of the Zagora didn't turn out. I'll try and get a better picture of this (so the silicates at least show) if anyone does end up being interested in this piece.

FRANCONIA, Arizona: Ordinary chondrite (H5). Found 2002. Tkw = about 100 kilogram.
This is a mostly natural, as found fragment/ partial individual. It shows fusion crust on around 50% of the surface. The remainder of the stone is in the form of two relatively flat ancient breaks. Despite the obvious (to me and likely to most other meteorite collectors anyway) fusion crust, it seems the finder (or someone that they gave it to) ground down a bit of one of the flat break surfaces to show fresh metal, likely to prove that this was indeed a meteorite. I believe that this was a Linton Rohr piece but I did not find a Rohr collection label to go with it when I picked up this (and other) piece back before this year’s Tucson show.

MOLDAVITE:
This is a selection of 10 really nice small complete specimens (I don’t see any fresh fracture surfaces on any of these) that I picked up in a trade in Tucson this past February. These are mostly elongate, quasi-teardrop shaped that measure around 20mm to 25mm long. These are in an 8cm x 5.5cm plastic display box.

NWA (1950): Martian (Shergottite), Iherzoltitc. Found January and March 2001. Tkw = 812 grams.
This has two different find dates as two different paired stones were found (one in each month). This is a “peridotitic” cumulate that is mostly olivine (55%), pyroxenes (35%) and plagioclase. This is indeed an interesting looking meteorite. These pieces show dark (dark gray to black) angular to sub-angular crystals (the olivine I think) in a light green matrix. It seems there is a reason that this does not look “typical” to me. It seems that it really isn’t. From a little poking around I see information that seems to be saying that this is the ONLY Iherzolitic shegottite available to collectors. The others are, supposedly, all from Antarctica and more weathered. Not sure how true this is, but it does show that this is something far more interesting than just a shegottite. This “lot” consists of pieces that I think are leftovers or broken off of larger pieces while cutting and polishing. There are two large pieces (one slice and one end piece/ cut fragment) that are around 8mm to 10mm in size, one medium sized slice (around 5mm or so across) and some small (around 2-3mm) fragments (around 5 pieces). The three large pieces each have fusion crust along a decent part of their edges. These are in a 7cm by 6cm glass fronted plastic display box. I have priced this considerably lower than the few prices I could find for this material elsewhere (which were around $1k to $2k/ gram).

NWA (6903): Iron. Medium octahedrite (IIIAB). Found 2008. Tkw = 50 kilograms.
This is a small piece of a nice medium octahedrite that I offered (and sold out of) on a mailed list some time ago. This particular piece got misplaced somehow or it too would likely have been sold back then. This is a rectangular specimen with one small natural (but highly cleaned) edge and is etched on both sides. I had this priced at $4/g when I originally offered it on my list but I am pricing it a bit cheaper here to “get it out of inventory” (so I no longer have to keep track of it as a separate inventory item) and give someone a fairly good middle of summer deal.

NWA (8179): Achondrite. (Ureilite). Found 2013. Tkw = 245 grams.
This is interesting stuff. It certainly does not look like a typical ureilte. It seems that the research work on it also showed that this is indeed not a typical ureilite. The research description says that this is a “relatively coarse-grained, protogranular aggregate of predominantly olivine (with reduced rims containing stained Fe metal) accompanied by minor orthopyroxene and pigionite”. It seems that (aside from its strange texture) that this is unusual in that it does contain orthopyroxene in addition the usual pigionitic pyroxene found in ureilites. The appearance of this is a mottled mix of light tan (nearly white in some spots) to medium brown matrix that has a lot of really fine brown veins running through it. I am not certain if these are shock related (this meteorite is listed as “moderate” in shock level) or from weathering of fresh metal (some of which is visible in this piece along one edge. An interesting specimen (that is a complete slice of a fragment) that is in a 7cm x 6cm glass fronted display case.
6.3 gram complete slice – 40mm x 25mm x 2mm - $175

TOLUCA, Mexico: Coarse octahedrite (IAB). Found 1776.
I have always found it odd that this meteorite is called a “coarse” octahedrite. Most of the etched pieces I have ever seen (and that includes this one) show more of a really nice medium octahedrite etch. This is a part slice that is etched on both sides. It, overall, is roughly square in shape and has one natural edge (the 3 others are cut edges). Other than showing a nice etch, this slice also has a couple (roughly 10mm to 15mm sized) troilite surrounded by graphite inclusions. A nice etched slice of a meteorite that I have seen very little of in recent years.

ZAGORA, Morocco: Iron. (IAB) with silicate inclusions. Found 1987. Tkw = 20+ kilograms.
This is a fairly thick part slice that I picked up from a collector who was letting go of a few items from his collection. He was not sure of the ID on this. He had not written down the name, assuming he’d always remember it (like I do sometimes) and then didn’t (also something I am guilty of). However, he had notes showing that he got this over 20 years ago. Well, pretty much the only silicated irons available back then were Zagore and (occasionally) Udei Station. This certainly looks like Zagora and the XRF tends to support this. Also, the thick cut was certainly something not uncommon back then for this material either. This has two cut edges with the remainder (a bit over 50% of the edge) being natural.

Dear Collectors,
                Happy New Year!  Here is the E_ mail version of my mailed list that is just now getting into the hands of those I sent them to.

Show info: I will be gone from home from about January 29th until about February 19th.  I will be at my usual show location: Ramada Limited, room 134. This is at St Marys and the interstate (next to Denny's) - just 1/4 mile or so due West of Inn Suites (Now called Hotel Tucson City Center - where many of the other meteorite dealers are). My room is about mid-way down the length of the motel (right next to the walk through actually) on the west- side of the building (on the parking lot side - and there is often parking available right in front of my room). I should be open the afternoon of February 2nd through the afternoon of February 14th  (NOTE: the show officially runs through Feb 16th but I may leave a couple days early. PLEASE let me know if you plan on visiting later than that so I can be sure to stick around). I will be open every day in between - generally from 10AM until  - ? (usually at least 7pm if I am going out to eat and often until 10pm or so other nights).

DEPORT, Texas: Coarse octahedrite (IAB). Found 1926. Tkw = over 15kilograms.
Here are a few (and only a few) of the special pieces of this meteorite that were written about in a recent Meteorite magazine (August 2012 issue). These pieces belonged to Oscar Monig and are among the very first meteorites he acquired. It has become apparent that Monig labeled these in the early tradition of Nininger where the number represented the meteorite locality (in order of acquisition into the collection) and the letters giving the order of the specimens as they were acquired (A being the first, B the second and so on). These fantastic pieces were the discovery pieces that showed Monig had done this numbering/ cataloging system in his early days. These all have a number 1 (thus his first cataloged meteorite locality) and then letter(s) metal stamped into them on a flat ground off spot. These were sold to me as Odessas a few years ago, but this discovery (and working with Dr. Ehlmann at TCU who discovered their “Monig’s first meteorite” is a Deport specimen that has a punched label of 1B on it) clearly showed that these were really Deports. I had very few of these special labeled specimens and even less now (3 total remaining) of these historic specimens. These are all rusty brown (natural) and have nice sculpted shape.

NWA (7196): Ordinary chondrite (LL6). Found before January 2012. Tkw = 384.6 grams.
Here is a bit of an interesting item. I got this from Matt Morgan who picked it up in Tucson last year. He cut it into nice thin slices to sell but then ended up trading the lot to me. We both were very certain that this was either an LL3 or LL4 as it seems to show a lot of chondrules. Research work says it is a completely unexpected LL6! I had it looked at twice to be certain. Sure enough, it has very tight Fa and Fs numbers on the olivine and pyroxene so it is indeed highly equilibrated. Looking closely at a slice of this you can see that many of the “chondrules” may really be more of rounded breccia clasts (there are indeed larger cm sized light gray clasts with rounded edges visible in this material). All but the smallest size listed are complete slices.

NWA (7336): Ordinary chondrite (L6), S3, W3. Found before February 2012. Tkw = 18 kilograms.
I got a sack of chondrite last Tucson that contained one large fragment and a bunch of small pieces. Some of these pieces fit together and what little cutting I have done on a few of the small pieces showed it was the same material. I had the big piece professionally cut and polished and am offering one part of it here (I may keep the other for a nice moderately weathered L display piece). I will be offering small cut pieces of this material in the future once it warms up enough to actually do some cutting (has been lows of -10°F and highs in the teens to low 20s the past month). Anyway, this is a nice display specimen that stands up vertically on its own. It shows lots of somewhat oxidized metal (more gray metallic than fully shiny) in a mottled tan and brown matrix. I wanted to offer this now as I will take it to Tucson and (reasonably likely) sell it there.
                4913 gram end piece/ cut fragment – 240mm x 200mm x 60mm - $2000

TULIA (A), Texas: Ordinary chondrite (H5). Found 1917. Tkw = 78+ kilograms.
Like the Deports above, these have an early Monig cataloging number on them. In this case these are white paint on a black background. These are all #12 so Tulia was Monig’s 12th meteorite locality cataloged into his collection. Each has further letters representing the order in which they were found/ acquired by Monig as well. I had quite a few similarly labeled specimens years ago but only have these three pieces remaining, now that we know what the numbers mean and their importance. Oscar Monig seems to have labeled very few meteorites in his collection this way. These pieces also have an
“M.#” label put on them by Glenn and Margaret Huss when they cataloged Monig’s collection in the 1980’s. These are all weathered natural fragments as found (some areas of crust still visible).

NWA (7043): Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3), W1. Found before September 2011. Tkw = 166grams.
I got a small bag of fragments at the Denver show a little over a year ago. Cutting showed that it was likely a CV3. However, it has a slightly different look to it than I am used to. This looks somewhat like a CK in that it has hard dark chondrules in a fairly abundant lighter (greenish gray) matrix. Yet it also has (in some pieces) a fair amount of metal in and surrounding the chondrules like a CR. The classification report did not say, but I suspect that this is a “reduced” CV chondrite where as Allende and NWA 2086 are the “oxidized” variety I believe.

NWA (4852): (Ureilite). Found before September 2007. Tkw = 1073.7 grams.
A single stone, broken in two was sold at the 2007 Denver Show. I got the bigger piece and I believe Ann Black got the smaller as it was put in the COMETS auction that year which I, unfortunately, did not get to attend (to busy in my room). I managed to talk Mike Martinez into cutting this stuff for me (a job I hate with this type meteorite – they take hours per slice and tear up saw blades, thanks to the diamonds and carbides in them). I got to spend many hours ripping up diamond sandpaper disks putting a polish on this stuff though. I get very few achondrites anymore (this is my last new one at this point) as the “out of the field” price on them is pretty much what I would want to be selling finished slices for per gram these days. I finally re-discovered this material while doing inventory work in late December. The large pieces are nice complete slices.

NWA (7045): Stony-iron (Pallasite). Found before September 2011. Tkw = 1127 grams.
I got a bag of small fragments of this “new pallasite” from a Moroccan dealer at the Denver Show. I knew it was oxidized, so there were no surprises there when I cut it. Frankly, this stuff would be close to impossible to sort from Huckitta if one accidentally mixed bags of each. However, the crystals in this material, on average, look much more like fresher olivine (more yellow orange) than those in Huckitta. Regardless, here are end pieces of a cheap pallasite guaranteed not to rust!

METEORITE TRADING CARDS:
I have had these sitting in a corner of my office for a couple years now. These are the 2011 “Inaugural edition”. They are pretty much the same as sports cards or such but for meteorites. They have a picture of meteorite(s) from the locality on one side (most actually have photos on both sides - the NWA (869) ones came from me) and info about the locality on the other. There are 10 cards in a set (actually 11 if you count the cover card). I don’t know if there were any other series (years) done of these.

Please include postage: $3 dollars on small U.S. orders and $11 on large items for first class (insurance is extra, if desired). On small overseas orders, $5 is generally plenty (I'll have to custom figure the rate for large items). Registration is also recommended on more valuable overseas shipments - an extra $12.00.
                If you are sending a fax, simply begin transmitting when my line is answered. My fax will turn on automatically to receive (or I will start it if I answer) when you begin transmitting. Or use brmeteorites@yahoo.com, but calls generally get to me faster (I don’t live on the computer and constantly check e-mail as some do).
